On the fringes of the business district and crowded crowds, lives in New York a young artist, who tries to earn a living by sketching on the sidewalk of passers-by. Living on little, even in the heart of winter, he took up residence in an abandoned building. One evening, at the bend of an alley, he picks up a little girl, whose father has just been murdered. He adopts her and somehow manages to feed her, clothe her and house her. It is then that he meets a rich young woman who, taken a liking to this comical couple, will invite them to his luxurious New York apartment...

Twenty years before The Artist, Sidewalk Story is an undisputed tribute to the legendary film by the man with the cane, Chaplin's Kid . Shot in sumptuous black and white, and in the spirit of silent films of the 1920s, Sidewalk Stories recounts with mischief and tenderness the story of friendship between a vagrant and a little girl. Charles Lane captures the daily life of the homeless, with a realism inevitably reminiscent of On the Bower and Lionel Rogosin, to deliver a timeless message of generosity, warmth and love, all accompanied by a musical score signed by composer Marc Marder. Sidewalk Stories is also one of those films of the New African-American Cinema of the 1980s which tackles controversial subjects such as the homeless, the daily life of the ghetto, the political demands of the community, like its contemporaries Do The Right Thing by Spike Lee and Boyz N The Hood by John Singleton.
