A timeless masterpiece of French cinema

New 2K restoration

On a Provençal farm, a protective and devoted mother raises her seven children while struggling at work. The father, a true old-fashioned patriarch, often absent, leads a double life. The difficult daily life of the farm is punctuated with the seasons by family micro-events which tend to bring the children closer to their mother. One day, as he goes to pick up his daughter at the bus stop, the father is seized by an incestuous temptation...

Sandrine Veysset's first film, Will there be snow at Christmas? involves the spectator, with a certain documentary reality, in the daily life of this family, thus showing the labor of work on the farm and this different way of thinking and acting. The director was inspired by her own story to accentuate the "reality" side of the film, thus giving it an autobiographical form. Dominique Reymond, a theater actress with an unimposing physique, exudes a real inner strength by playing the role of the mother. Admirably played by Daniel Duval, the father is both a seductive and despicable character reminiscent of the terrifying adoptive father of the children in The Night of the Hunter , Charles Laughton's sumptuous film. Will there be snow at Christmas? is an atypical masterpiece dealing with an environment rarely shown on screen, to be discovered in its splendid digital version restored to 2K!
