Ang Lee's first film, delicate and honest
"A DEBUT FILM THAT COMBINES CHARM AND FLAVOR."
HUMANITY
AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON BLU-RAY
It's been a month since Mr. Chu left China for the United States, where he settled with his son and family. But the elderly man is finding it difficult to adapt to the American lifestyle and immediately clashes with his daughter-in-law, Martha. A former tai chi instructor in Beijing, Mr. Chu now teaches at a Chinese cultural center, which allows him to maintain a connection with his adopted country and meet other expatriates like himself …
The director's first feature film, Pushing Hands, which inaugurates his "Father Knows Best" trilogy (with The Wedding Banquet and Eat Drink Man Woman), already explores most of Ang Lee's recurring themes surrounding the traditional father figure, who views the art of tai chi as a metaphor for life. In this deeply personal film, the Taiwanese director portrays with precision and sensitivity the consequences of culture clash within a family, thus paying a beautiful tribute to the cinema of the great masters Yasujiro Ozu and Frank Capra.
