A SUMPTUOUS ADAPTATION OF FLAUBERT'S FAMOUS NOVEL
"He is a character whose destiny is a metaphor. Of a certain feminine condition and its alienation."
ISABELLE HUPPERT
In the 19th century, the daughter of a Norman peasant, Emma Bovary was brought up in an elegant convent before marrying a health officer. Nourished by romantic readings, she aspires to romantic loves and a life of luxury that neither her husband nor the dull and pontificating bourgeoisie of the city bring her. She becomes the mistress of a local squire who abandons her, then of a notary's clerk, as well as the prey of an unscrupulous cloth merchant.
“Flaubert was leaning over my shoulder. He helped me a lot. His book was written for the cinema. Everything is there, the sounds, the gestures, the movements, I just had to follow them. […] Emma has been chasing me since I was thirteen. With her, I discovered love and passed my exams. Each time, whether at the baccalaureate or for the French literature certificate at the Sorbonne, I came across her and it brought me luck. Maybe it's my guardian angel. – Claude Chabrol
