Tokyo, late 1960s. Eddie, a young drag queen, is the favorite of Gonda, owner of the Genet bar where she works. This relationship provokes the jealousy of Gonda's mistress, Leda, an older drag queen and matron of the bar. Eddie and Gonda then wonder how to get rid of the latter...

The first feature film by documentary and experimental filmmaker Toshio Matsumoto, The Funeral of the Roses paints an unvarnished portrait of the Tokyo drag-queen community at the end of the 1960s. This pop and hybrid rewriting of the myth of 'Œdipe is an invaluable document on the Japanese homosexual milieu of the time, but also a great film with a singular cinematographic language, to be discovered for the first time in France in its 4K restoration!
