At the beginning of the century. Claude Roc meets Anne Brown, a young Englishwoman passing through Paris. She invites him to Wales, to introduce him to her sister Muriel, to whom she intends him. Claude asks Muriel in marriage, the young woman refuses, but leaves him hope. The mothers of Claude and Muriel impose a separation of one year on them. Back in Paris, Claude becomes an art critic, meets other women and becomes Anne's lover...
