A former anti-fascist partisan, Carlo Lizzani contributed to the screenplays of numerous neorealist masterpieces ( Germany Year Zero , Bitter Rice ) before directing his own feature films, mostly dealing with World War II and the Resistance, such as Chronicle of Poor Lovers . A meticulous reconstruction of a chapter in Italian history, The Last Days of Mussolini scrutinizes the end of a pathetic tyrant's reign with almost documentary-like precision, sometimes bordering on thriller territory.
