A rare and unseen epic by Carlo Lizzani starring Rod Steiger with music by Ennio Morricone
"CARLO LIZZANI EXPLORES, FROM FILM TO FILM, THE TRAGIC DESTINY OF ITALY."
TELERAMA
AVAILABLE FOR THE FIRST TIME ON BLU-RAY
April 25, 1945. The Republic of Salò was breathing its last. Benito Mussolini, in Milan under German protection, refused to heed the advice of the city's bishop, Cardinal Schuster, who urged him to surrender to the partisans of the National Liberation Committee. Accompanied by his mistress Clara Petacci and his most loyal lieutenants, the Duce fled under German escort towards Switzerland, hoping to surrender to the Allied troops and escape popular wrath. But his journey would end three days later on the shores of Lake Como…
A former anti-fascist partisan, Carlo Lizzani contributed to the screenplays of numerous neorealist masterpieces ( Germany Year Zero , Bitter Rice ) before directing his own feature films, mostly dealing with World War II and the Resistance, such as Chronicle of Poor Lovers . A meticulous reconstruction of a chapter in Italian history, The Last Days of Mussolini scrutinizes the end of a pathetic tyrant's reign with almost documentary-like precision, sometimes bordering on thriller territory. Released for the first time on Blu-ray™ in its new 4K restoration, this film impresses with its two masterful scores: those of maestro Ennio Morricone and his prodigious actor, Rod Steiger!

“ Carlo Lizzani’s aim is to avoid sensationalism; he wants the film to give the impression of objectively recounting the facts. […] All of Italy wanted Mussolini dead; symbolically, it was a way of breaking with a historical period they no longer wanted to hear about .” An exclusive interview with Jean-François Rauger, film critic and director of programming at the Cinémathèque française.
