A famous ode to gastronomy for the first time on Blu-ray!
On the coast of Jutland live two old sisters, Martine and Filippa, daughters of an authoritarian pastor who was in his time the founder of a local religious community. One evening a French refugee arrives in the village, sent by a former suitor of Filippa. Her name is Babette and she asks for asylum with the sisters. Fourteen years later, the Frenchwoman has become their faithful servant. One day, she wins a large sum in the lottery. But rather than keep the money, Babette decides to upset the ascetic principles of this community by organizing a sumptuous dinner, in the great French tradition...
Faithfully adapted from a tale by Karen Blixen (writer already brought to the screen with Out of Africa), Le Festin de Babette is an ode to gastronomy and hedonism. From a romantic plot mixed with sentimental intrigues, Gabriel Axel mocks the austerity of the Protestant Nordic world, undermined by the delights of a genius cook embodied by Stéphane Audran (The Unfaithful Woman). Cooking had never been shown in the cinema with so much passion and delicacy! A great popular success, Le Festin de Babette won the Oscar® for best foreign film in 1988 and remains an international classic!
