Active since the mid-1960s, he began as an assistant on the films of his father, the great Mario Bava, then on those of other filmmakers, from Dario Argento to Ruggero Deodato, before finally making his directorial debut in 1980 with Macabro . The diptych consisting of Demons 1 and Demons 2 , instant classics of Italian horror, allowed him to establish a personal style and gain recognition from horror fans around the world.
Lamberto Bava, an Italian filmmaker, represents the third generation of a film family which, until now, has numbered four.
With a rich career spanning more than half a century, and for some years an author of science fiction and horror works in Italy, Lamberto Bava is a complete filmmaker and close to his audience.
This close relationship allowed the authors of this book to meet him several times and exchange ideas with him. Discussing the different genres in which he has worked so far, Lamberto Bava speaks candidly and openly.
The sum of these interviews paints a portrait of a man for whom cinema is first and foremost a matter of family and technique. It is also a means of exploring fear through recurring themes and motifs which, throughout his career, trace a rational path, building a coherent body of work rich in numerous cinematic, literary, and musical influences.
Gérald Duchaussoy works at the Cannes Film Festival and the Lumière Institute.
Romain Vandestichele is an English teacher. He is passionate about cinema and music, and sings in his spare time.
Together, Gérald Duchaussoy and Romain Vandestichele previously wrote the book Mario Bava, the magician of colours (Lobster Films editions).
