The body of the Catholic writer Raoul Mons is discovered on a beach. Dispatched to the scene, Inspector Lavardin is surprised to discover, in the person of Hélène, the widow of Mons, a woman he loved and still loves. Between the theater troupe, whose play Mons had just had banned, Hélène's brother, a homosexual, her daughter from a previous husband, a teenager who hangs out at night near a nightclub run by the sleazy Monsieur Max, Lavardin will have to choose a culprit…
