A loose variation on Robert Wiene's *The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari* , Stephen Sayadian's ( *Café Flesh* ) film invents a successor to the greatest mad scientist of silent cinema, in the form of a domineering and perverse psychiatrist. *Dr. Caligari* evokes the work of David Lynch and Bertrand Mandico through its hallucinatory environment, where German Expressionism flirts with horrific pop art and the most unbridled sexual dreamscapes. Driven by dialogues as hilarious as they are provocative, the film blends the sensual strangeness of its images with a scathing and subversive critique of medical institutions.
