Middlesex, Iowa, 1988. Donnie Darko is a sixteen-year-old teenager like no other. Introverted and emotionally disturbed, he maintains a friendship with a certain Frank, a giant rabbit that only he can see and hear. One night when Donnie is awakened by the voice of his imaginary friend who tells him to follow him, he miraculously survives an accident that could have been fatal to him. At the same time, Frank announces to him that the end of the world is near. From then on, Donnie will obey the voice and cause a series of events that will sow trouble within the community...

A mixture of melancholy teen-movie and fantastic thriller, its creator takes us on a chaotic journey to the heart of the psyche of a teenager, embodied with confusion by Jake Gyllenhaal.
