In this amoral chronicle that admirably describes the entertainment of a rural America eaten away by boredom, the great cinematographer Néstor Almendros ( The Harvest of Heaven ) manages to sublimate the fight scenes, distilling as much terror and brutality as poetry. A favorite actor of Monte Hellman and Sam Peckinpah, Warren Oates ( Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia ) is exceptional in this almost silent role of a magnificent loser.
