VITTORIO DE SETA'S FIRST FEATURE FILM OF ABSOLUTE BEAUTY
"VITTORIO DE SETA IS A POET OF REALITY." PIER PAOLO PASOLINI
In the heart of the rocky and desolate mountains of Sardinia, Michele watches over his flock of sheep with his younger brother Giuseppe. One day, three strangers arrive at his sheepfold, wanted by the carabinieri for stealing pigs. Michele will find himself wrongly accused of the theft and then the murder of one of the gendarmes perpetrated by one of the thugs. To escape prison, the shepherd decides to flee into the mountains with his brother and his animals...
Fascinated by Sardinia and its inhabitants, filmmaker Vittorio De Seta decided to shoot his first feature film in this region: Bandits in Orgosolo , a fictionalized version of Sardinian reality seen from the point of view of a shepherd. At a time when Italian filmmakers were increasingly turning away from neorealism, De Seta loudly claimed the legacy of this movement. A rural cousin of Vittorio De Sica's Bicycle Thieves , Bandits in Orgosolo was awarded Best First Film at the 1961 Venice Film Festival.
