An elderly couple take a trip to visit their children. First welcomed with the respect due to them, the parents soon prove to be disturbing. Only Noriko, the widow of their son who died in the war, finds the time to devote to them. The children, for their part, contribute to offer them a stay in the spa resort of Atami, far from Tokyo...
Ozu builds his stories and characters meticulously and manages to touch the viewer deeply. Bringing together all of his faithful actors within the same family, the Japanese master delivers here the quintessence of his work. Shot after shot, the filmmaker takes the time necessary to convey the inexorable: old age, estrangement, abandonment of traditional customs, death. The admirable reconstruction of reality on screen forces us to accept it as if it were life itself. Heartbreaking, Journey to Tokyo remains one of Ozu's most accessible, fascinating and accomplished works.
