In a town on the outskirts of Tokyo, a group of young boys spend their time watching television at a neighbor's house deemed too eccentric. One evening, little Minaru and Isamu urge their parents to have their own television set, in vain: the eldest then gets angry at the adults' hypocrisy and decides to go on a "speech strike", immediately followed by his younger brother...
Second color film by Yasujiro Ozu, Bonjour prolongs the reflections dear to the filmmaker thanks to a magnificently refined staging. Ozu has fun dissecting the daily life of a suburban neighborhood, to finally go against the discourse denounced by the children. Bonjour is one of the filmmaker's happiest films, striking the perfect balance between minimalism, humor and close observation of everyday life.
