At the end of the Edo period, a lone samurai named Sanjuro arrives in a village torn between two rival gangs, led on one side by the sake brewer Tokuemon, and on the other by the silk merchant Tazaemon. While the two gangs fight each other for control of the village, the terrified villagers no longer dare to go out. When Sanjuro discovers the situation, he decides to play both rival clans against each other by working alternately for one and then the other…
With Yojimbo, Akira Kurosawa returns to historical reconstruction set at the end of the Edo period. Inspired by the famous crime novelist Dashiell Hammett, the director adopts both the codes of the samurai film and those of the American western – of which he is a great admirer –, choosing however to satirize them, with a keen sense of irony. A huge success in Japan, Yojimbo is recognized as the matrix of the Spaghetti Western wave, led by Sergio Leone who would direct a remake with A Fistful of Dollars in 1964.
