In 1961, Accattone signed his birth certificate as a filmmaker, soon followed by Mamma Roma, two works in a style imbued with neorealism. His next films will be marked by a singular and poetic aesthetic research: the daring documentary Inquiry into sexuality, the political farce Small and big birds, and the famous trilogy on myths (The Gospel according to Saint Matthew, Oedipus King and Medea) , accompanied by fragments of his African Oresteia, which never saw the light of day.
