FROM POST-WAR STUDIOS TO THE NEW WAVE OF THE 70S, VIA EXPERIMENTAL CINEMA AND ON TO DIGITAL FILM

Through the essays collected in this book, the fruit of decades of research, Nick Deocampo explores the multifaceted nature of independent Philippine cinema. He unveils his vision of a combative art form, at once poetic and political, authentic and free, lucid and intimate, liberated from the artifice of the dominant industry as well as the constraints of state censorship. A cinema that, beyond the archipelago, outlines the possible horizons of audiovisual art for the peoples of tomorrow.

Filmmaker, producer, historian, writer and teacher at the University of the Philippines, Nick Deocampo (born in 1959) embodies a major figure in Philippine alternative cinema, whose career has notably been rewarded with five National Book Awards and two Lifetime Achievement Awards, awarded by the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences in 1990 and the Film Development Council of the Philippines in 2023, as well as a Premio Casa Asia, the highest Spanish cultural distinction for Asia, in 2023.
