Ingmar Bergman
Notebooks 1955-2001
translation by Jean-Baptiste Bardin

1st translation in the world of an exceptional work and finally available!

Committing himself to a discipline of writing, Ingmar Bergman recorded in his notebooks his slightest reflections, sometimes abruptly, scathingly or, on the contrary, patiently following the convolutions of his thought and his desire, until reaching their exact formulations through situations, portraits, dynamics.

Here, it is the very germination of Bergman's creative work that is offered to the reader. How ideas spring, interpenetrate, echo or collide, divide and tie together, to result in some of the greatest films of the 20th century.

From the Seventh Seal (1957) to Sarabande (2004), passing by Persona (1966), Sonate d'automne (1978) or Fanny and Alexandre (1982), these unpublished Notebooks reveal to us the mental backstage of his most famous works, but also never-before-realized film projects, through dialogues, scenes and anecdotes where reality and memories mingle with fiction and dreams.

We see Bergman live and evolve with his characters – perhaps even more than with his contemporaries. He discovers them, challenges them, follows them and listens to them, always leaving them free to tell him what their story is about. And this is one of the unexpected aspects of these Notebooks: Bergman's incessant exchange with his protagonists, his ghosts and his demons, who accompany him in his most trivial reflections as well as his most ardent prayers.

Alternately a diary and an exploration of the beating heart of creation, these Notebooks give us a poignant self-portrait, that of an artist on a daily basis, with his moments of euphoria and despondency, in the desperate search for buried truth, raw and intimate, beings and feelings.
