A high school teacher and his student mysteriously disappear during the summer holidays. Before disappearing into thin air, Mr. Yabe had contacted Reijiro Hieda, an archaeologist with eccentric methods, to tell him about a strange discovery he had just made. The scientist then arrives in the village and sets off in search of his friend alongside young Masao, the teacher's son. Together, the improbable duo will discover that the high school is located above an ancient mound that could well be an underground gateway to hell...
Two years after the cyberpunk bomb Tetsuo , filmmaker Shinya Tsukamoto is back with this second film adapted from the work of mangaka Daijiro Morohoshi. A unique and playful reinterpretation of Japanese ghost cinema, Hiruko the Goblin mixes gore terror and surrealist humor with a great deal of inventive special effects.
