THE FIRST FEATURE FILM BY VITTORIO DE SETA OF ABSOLUTE BEAUTY

“VITTORIO DE SETA IS A POET OF REALITY.” PIER PAOLO PASOLINI

In the heart of the rocky and desolate mountains of Sardinia, Michele watches over his flock of sheep with his younger brother Giuseppe. One day, three strangers arrive in his sheepfold, wanted by the carabinieri for stealing pigs. Michele will find himself wrongly accused of the theft and then the murder of one of the gendarmes perpetrated by one of the thugs. To escape prison, the shepherd decides to flee to the mountains in the company of his brother and his animals...

Fascinated by Sardinia and its inhabitants, filmmaker Vittorio De Seta decided to shoot his first feature film in this region: Bandits in Orgosolo , a fictionalization of Sardinian reality seen from the point of view of a shepherd. At a time when Italian filmmakers are increasingly turning away from neorealism, De Seta loudly claims the heritage of this movement. A rural cousin of Vittorio De Sica's The Bicycle Thief , Bandits in Orgosolo was crowned Best First Film at the 1961 Venice Film Festival.
