A MAJOR NEW HOLLYWOOD FILM DIRECTED BY HAL ASHBY
"HAL ASHBY IS WITHOUT DOUBT THE MOST CHEMICALLY PURE FILMMAKER OF THIS ENCHANTED PARENTHESIS OF AMERICAN CINEMA THAT IS NEW HOLLYWOOD."
JEAN-BAPTISTE THORET
Los Angeles, 1968. Captain in the Marines, Bob Hyde leaves to fight in Vietnam. Wanting to make herself useful in the absence of her husband, Sally volunteers at the veterans' hospital where she finds a former high school friend, Luke Martin, who has become a paraplegic. This broken man, subject to multiple outbursts of anger, gradually regains a taste for life in contact with the young woman...
Released in 1978, Return is one of the first studio films to evoke the trauma of Vietnam War veterans. A figurehead of New Hollywood with works like Shampoo and The Last Corvée , Hal Ashby gives body to the wounded of this “dirty war”, bruised heroes suddenly rendered invisible to the eyes of society. Sublimated by its trio of interpreters, Jane Fonda, Jon Voight and Bruce Dern, Retour will upset all of America, which will make it a triumph at the 1979 Oscars® ceremony*.
