A founding film of the new western of the 1970s

Having gone hunting in the North-West of the United States, John Morgan, an English lord, is captured by Sioux Indians. He owes his salvation only to the chief of the tribe, Yellow Hand, who decides to offer him as a slave to his mother. Tired of being considered a common horse, John tries to escape, in vain. He then meets Batise, a Métis captive, who teaches him the Sioux way of life and gradually falls under the spell of Running Dear, Yellow Hand's sister...

By adapting a short story by American author Dorothy M. Johnson, Elliot Silverstein accurately captures the daily life of a Sioux tribe in the 19th century. In line with Little Big Man (Arthur Penn) and The Blue Soldier (Ralph Nelson) released the same year, A Man Named Horse renews the western and the figure of the Indian through the initiatory and uncompromising journey of John Morgan, camped by the impressive Richard Harris ( Ruthless ).
