Echizen Province, summer 1913. On his way to Kyoto, Professor Yamasawa passes through a drought-stricken village, lost in the middle of the mountains. Nearby is the Devil's Pond, the object of superstitions on the part of the inhabitants. Indeed, if the village bell does not ring daily, the dragon trapped at the bottom of the water would be released and cause a deadly flood. Yamasawa's arrival at Akira and Yuri's, the couple responsible for upholding this immutable tradition, will soon jeopardize this balance...
Adapting a hit kabuki play written in the early 20th century, filmmaker Masahiro Shinoda ( Double Suicide in Amijima , Silence ) delivers a film that is unabashedly theatrical but also visually daring. A celebration of both traditional and modern Japanese culture, Demon's Pond is a captivating work that straddles the border between the marvelous and the fantastical, available for the first time on Blu-ray™ and DVD in its 4K restoration.
