It's a party night with the Krüger-Epps, a typical Cologne working-class family. All the members of the clan are gathered to celebrate the sixty years of the grandmother, a somewhat whimsical widow who lives with her daughter, her son-in-law and her grandson Jochen. While the latter has left to supply the troop with champagne, he crosses paths with the pretty Marion and invites her to join them. It will be the beginning of a great love story between this worker always ready to fight for more social justice in his factory and this modern and emancipated young woman who works in a local newspaper. Surrounded by their family, colleagues and friends, Jochen and Marion will learn to share together the joys and difficulties of everyday life...
In this five-part series produced by German broadcaster Westdeutscher Rundfunk (WDR), writer and director Rainer Werner Fassbinder describes the daily life of a working-class family, highlighting the importance of life outside of work because, as as its title indicates, the eight hours of statutory work are not enough to fill a day. The first serious attempt on German television to combine social criticism and popular entertainment, Eight hours do not make a day tackles with empathy and humor key issues such as the question of solidarity at work, the problem of high rents or divorce... Fassbinder offers an exciting alternative to the factitious and illusory world usually represented on television, made up of men and women far removed from the average television viewer. Around the couple Jochen and Marion, respectively interpreted by the formidable Gottfried John and Hanna Schygulla, evolve about fifteen characters to which many key actors of Fassbinder come to lend their features (Irm Hermann, Wolfgang Schenck, Hans Hirschmüller), accompanied by "new venus” as Luise Ullrich, the indescribable grandmother, and Werner Finck as her companion. Fassbinder's first foray into the world of television series, Eight hours do not make a day became a real social phenomenon when it was broadcast, thrilling families, creating much debate between critics, intellectuals and workers. At the time of the golden age of television series, it is essential to discover the first masterpieces of the genre of which Fassbinder was one of the great European representatives with Le Monde sur le fil and Berlin Alexanderplatz . Totally unpublished in France, Eight hours do not make a day is to be admired in its magnificent 2K restoration!
