Since the late 1980s, director Shinya Tsukamoto has established himself as one of the masters of transgressive Japanese cinema with radical and edgy works such as Tokyo Fist , Bullet Ballet , A Snake of June and the first two Tetsuo films, which laid the foundations of the cyberpunk movement in Japan. Frequently exploring themes of urban alienation, physical transformation and psychosexual obsession, his films with their unique aesthetics abolish genres and defy direct classification, attracting emulation from the likes of Quentin Tarantino, Darren Aronofsky and Gaspar Noé.
