Described as a radical filmmaker, making metaphysical films in sooty black and white like his masterpiece Sátántangó , Béla Tarr began his career in 1977 in the documentary vein of the social realism of the “Budapest School”. Available for the first time on Blu-ray™ in their 2K and 4K restoration, the four films bear witness to the incredible journey taken by this visionary filmmaker, from the anger of his early works ( The Family Nest , The Outsider ) to the masterful and melancholic fables that are Damnation and Werckmeister Harmonies . The latter marked the turning point in the stylistic revolution that Béla Tarr would pursue throughout his filmography.

Written by Mathieu Lericq and Damien Marguet, specialists in Eastern European cinema, this booklet looks back at Béla Tarr's career and the metamorphoses of his work, starting with the documentary-inspired urban huis clos of the 1970s and 1980s, up to the metaphysical fables conceived more recently with the writer László Krasznahorkai.
