A VIBRANT PORTRAIT OF WOMEN IN WHICH ISABELLE HUPPERT SHINES
"For me, A Women's Affair is an extremely modern film." MARIN KARMITZ
During the Occupation, Marie raised her two children with difficulty, while her husband Paul was a prisoner in Germany. She helps a neighbor terminate an unwanted pregnancy. Soon, it's the gear. The reasons are not lacking in these difficult times: prisoner husbands, love affairs or guilty liaisons with the occupier, little by little, Marie's services will be rewarded and will become her livelihood. The return of Paul, embittered and weakened, contrasts with the material comfort thus obtained and Marie soon dreams of another life... But Vichy France does not like that individual happiness unfolds on the margins of official morality ...
“On the staging side, I had fun making a film from 1943 and not a film about 1943. The filmmakers of the time had not yet seen Citizen Kane . They ignored perspective, depth of field. I played on it. And, for my personal pleasure, I tried new methods of narration. – Claude Chabrol
