A visually stunning tragic and poetic work by the director of Citizen Kane

New 2K restoration

In Venice, weddings take place in secret between the Moor Othello, a Venetian general esteemed by his peers, and the beautiful Desdemona, daughter of the senator Brabantio. At the back of the church, two men stand back: there is Iago, Othello's officer who has an immeasurable hatred for his superior, and Roderigo, madly in love with Desdemona. After their union, Othello goes to fight the Turkish fleet, then finds his wife on the island of Cyprus where he is appointed governor. The deceitful Iago is then determined to destroy the happiness of the newlyweds and will therefore work to manipulate those around them...

Shortly after the release of Macbeth in 1948, Orson Welles ( The Magnificent Ambersons ) adapted Shakespeare for the cinema for the second time. Despite filming strewn with pitfalls, his Othello is a stunning transposition of the original tragedy, very justly rewarded at the 1952 Cannes Film Festival. Carried by a breathtaking trio of actors (Orson Welles, Micheál Mac Liammóir and Suzanne Cloutier), Othello is a masterpiece of unmistakable aesthetics, available for the first time in its restored 2K version.
