When he is released from prison, Franz reunites with his friend Joanna and discovers that her brother has been murdered. Leaving the latter, too possessive, the young man prefers the company of Margarethe and even more of the "gorilla", an old gangster, with whom he plans to rob a supermarket...
The Gods of the Plague testifies to Fassbinder's mastery of the codes of Hollywood cinema. By borrowing from American film noir its contrasts pushed to the extreme by a subtle play of light, the director goes beyond the simple formal framework to mark with his seal a reflection on the German middle class of the 1960s.
