Leaving for the Russian front just after his marriage, Hermann Braun is reported missing, while his wife Maria becomes a trainer in a bar for GIs. There she meets Bill, a black soldier with whom she becomes pregnant. Hermann reappears and surprises them in the same bed. Maria kills Bill, but it is Hermann who is imprisoned for ten years...
Fassbinder's public recognition, in Germany and France, did not come until late, at the end of the 1970s, with his thirty-third feature film, The Marriage of Maria Braun . It is also the first part of a trilogy on Germany in the 1950s, that of Adenauer, reconstruction and the economic miracle. The pinnacle of the filmmaker's last period, The Marriage of Maria Braun is a magnificent tribute to Hollywood melodrama, in particular to the master of Fassbinder: Douglas Sirk.
