A widower, Shuhei Hirayama is approaching retirement and still lives with his daughter Michiko, who is of marriageable age. Both father and daughter postpone the deadline, one fearing loneliness and the other the guilt of abandonment. After work, Hirayama is used to meeting up with friends for a drink. One evening, one of them offers him a son-in-law for his daughter, but the father hesitates. A few days later, the group of friends reunites with one of their former teachers who, having been unable to separate from his daughter, now lives in poverty. Hirayama then thinks it's time to think about Michiko's future...
Last film of Ozu's career, The Taste of Saké is also one of his most touching and personal stories. Taking up the plot of Late Spring , the filmmaker delivers a new variation on the passage of time, the evolution of morals and the family, which serves as an epilogue for all of his work. With a disillusioned look, he draws up the inventory of Japan in the 1960s, between the disappearance of traditional values and the westernization of the new generation.
