"Cinema was never before, and never again since, so close to its own essence, to its ultimate beauty." Wim Wenders
A group of old friends reunite and discuss the future of their daughters, now of marriageable age. One of them, Wataru Hirayama, is a senior executive firmly attached to his conservative values, but sometimes speaking to his friends in a progressive discourse on love and marriage. One day, a young man comes to his office: his name is Masahiko Taniguchi and asks for the hand of Setsuko, his eldest daughter. Hirayama's decision is final: he refuses to let his daughter marry the man she loves...
Yasujiro Ozu's first color film, Fleurs d'équinoxe paints a moving portrait of a father torn between conservatism and progressivism. The Japanese filmmaker returns to the themes that are dear to him – the family and the question of filiation, the abandonment of traditions – by placing himself from the point of view of the parents. Faithful to his minimalist staging, Ozu opts here for a lighter tone, far from the melodramas that made him famous ( Il was a father , Twilight in Tokyo ).
