Gondo, an executive in a large shoe factory, decides to gather all his assets to buy the necessary shares to become the majority shareholder. He then learns that his son Jun has been kidnapped and a ransom is demanded. A twist of fate: it is not Jun but Shinichi, his chauffeur's son, who has been kidnapped. Gondo is now faced with a dilemma: should he spend his entire fortune to save someone else's child?
Mainly known for his great feudal epics (Rashomon, Seven Samurai), Akira Kurosawa also directed a series of remarkable film noirs, set in contemporary Japan. Starring Toshiro Mifune and Tatsuya Nakadai, High and Low is a brilliant reflection on morality and capitalism, adapted from a novel by Ed McBain.
