Yasujiro Ozu (1903-1963) is the most famous director of the golden age of Japanese cinema, author of classics such as Tokyo Kids , Late Spring , Late Autumn and Hello . If his work, composed of 54 films, was long considered too Japanese, it appears to us today as timeless and universal. At the heart of his cinema, the theme of the family prevails, declined by the director from the silent era to color, in essential films whose staging is recognizable among all, like Tokyo Journey , Last Whim or The Taste of Saké . Ozu spent his whole life designing his own grammar, of astonishing beauty, and contributed to inventing the seventh art in Asia. This book offers to tell a fascinating journey through the first century of Japanese cinema and the abundant work of Ozu, through numerous unpublished anecdotes, the portrait of his main collaborators (including the stars Setsuko Hara and Kinuyo Tanaka, or his favorite actor Chishu Ryu) and more than 240 rare photos or documents, from the funds of Shochiku, Carlotta Films and the filmmaker's family.

Pascal-Alex Vincent is a filmmaker and teaches at the University of Paris-3 – Sorbonne Nouvelle. He has directed several documentaries on Japanese cinema, and coordinated the Dictionary of Japanese Cinema in 101 Filmmakers (2016) and the Dictionary of Japanese Actors and Actresses (2018) for Carlotta Films.
