In the past, Bernard and Mathilde loved each other passionately, then separated violently. Seven years later, Mathilde and her husband come to settle in their new house, next to the one where Bernard, his wife Arlette and their little boy live. Everyone meets at the tennis club run by Madame Jouve, the one by whom this story is told to us. Mathilde and Bernard are not wise enough to become friends. Between her and him, it will be, as Madame Jouve says, “neither with you nor without you”.
