An initiation to travel and wandering by a cinema aesthete
New 4K restoration
A man, Ivan, returns to Manila, seemingly aimlessly. As he wanders and encounters, the writer meanders through the fascinating megalopolis in search of his past and the meaning of his existence.
Cinq et la peau is the second film by Pierre Rissient, a pioneering cinephile and pioneer of great authors such as Jerry Schatzberg, King Hu or Lino Brocka. The director combines with mastery and sensuality his loves: classic Hollywood cinema, jazz, poetry and Manila, making this film a real viewing experience that appeals as much to the sensitivity of the viewer as to his intelligence. Cinq et la pe u is immediately striking for its formal bias since it is entirely devoid of dialogue. Instead, a voice-over accompanies the images, leading the viewer into the inner universe of the hero, Ivan, wonderfully interpreted by the actor Féodor Atkine (Pauline at the beach , In the courtyard ). The film recounts the wanderings of this man in a city which is not his own but which he will get to know – the filmmaker then paints a portrait of Manila which breaks free from Western clichés, showing the Philippine capital in all its diversity and its contrasts, from beautiful neighborhoods to slums – and which ends up becoming one with it and, literally, with its inhabitants. Along the way, cinephile Pierre Rissient pays a magnificent tribute to his masters of cinema, Fritz Lang and Raoul Walsh in the lead, some excerpts of their works punctuate the film, to which is added El Filibusterism o by Filipino director Gerardo de Léon ( 1962), recalling that this country has always been one of the most important in Asian cinema. Invisible since its release, Cinq et la peau is a unique and powerfully magnetic work that has acquired the status of an almost mythical art object, to be finally (re)discovered in a new 4K restoration.
