– 1957 – From "Seventh Seal" to "Wild Strawberries"
A striking dive into the world of the Swedish master

In 1957, at the dawn of his fortieth birthday, Ingmar Bergman entered a period of unprecedented productivity. That year, he made no less than two films and a television film, staged four plays and combined hard work with a tumultuous family life...

1957 is undoubtedly the most productive year for Ingmar Bergman.
The Seventh Seal premieres on February 16, while its five-hour long adaptation of Peer Gynt opens at the National Theater in Malmö on March 8.
On April 18, Mr. Sleeman is Coming airs on the Swedish public broadcaster. The next day, his radio play adapted from La Prisonnière is on the air. On July 2, the filming of Wild Strawberries begins, which ends on August 27. On October 14, Nattens Ljus ( Night Light ), of which Bergman is the co-writer, hits theaters. On 16 November, his play adapted from Gogol's Players was broadcast on Swedish radio, while a month later his staging of The Misanthrope premiered at the National Theater in Malmö. Wild Strawberries is shown for the first time on December 26…

What might Bergman's life have been like during this auspicious year? A wife, two lovers and six children. How did he manage his private life and what influence did it have on his work, and vice versa? Bergman, a year in a life attempts to unravel the mystery of the master through the prism of this magical year.
